Art Acevedo

Art Acevedo, renowned for his exceptional leadership in public safety, has served as the head of police departments in four major American cities: Austin, Houston, Miami and Aurora. His leadership is marked by his staunch advocacy for criminal justice reform, harm reduction and community trust building. This commitment has earned him national recognition. Before his roles in urban policing, Acevedo was the Chief of the California Highway Patrol (CHP), primarily serving in Los Angeles County during his 21-year tenure. 

Chief Acevedo's leadership during critical national crises has been commendable. His decisive actions during Hurricane Harvey averted a larger disaster, earning him accolades from Newsweek Magazine and many other news outlets and communities. He was also widely praised for his leadership and advocacy for comprehensive police reform in the aftermath of George Floyd's death, demonstrating his ability to navigate high-pressure situations with poise and effectiveness. 

Chief Acevedo emphasizes effective two-way communication between the police department and the community, believing it is essential for community success. He champions "Relational Policing," a practice focused on building relationships with all individuals the department interacts with. His background as an immigrant from Cuba and his educational accomplishments, including a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of La Verne, uniquely position him for his role as a public safety leader in diverse urban settings.
