A New Life Journey

UVA Health Team Member Embarks on New Path Toward Bachelor's Degree in Enlighten

Like many students enrolled in UVA’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies’ programs, Victoria Sims leads a busy life between her personal and professional roles. In addition to being a wife, mother to two young women and grandmother to two little girls, Sims’ career includes over two decades with the UVA Health System.

With what many would consider a full life already, what inspired Sims to enroll in Enlighten and begin earning undergraduate credit in a program that prepares students for a bachelor’s degree completion program?

Sims shares her motivation and more – read on!

Can you tell us about your career?

I’ve spent my 22-year career with the UVA Health System (formerly UVA Physicians Group, now UVA Medical Center). I began as a Medical Office Assistant in 2004 and gradually advanced into leadership roles, including managing a large multi-specialty clinic with 17 specialties, overseeing primary care practices, and serving as Pod Manager, Senior Manager/Interim Director. Currently, I’m working in Access Improvement Process Management. Throughout my career, I’ve faced challenges and changes, but I’ve been fortunate to have incredible mentors and leaders who play a crucial role in shaping me into the leader I am today.

Why did you decide to enroll in the Enlighten program?

When I transitioned from UVA Physicians Group to UVA Medical Center, many positions required a bachelor’s degree, so my manager encouraged me to apply for the UVA Enlighten program. Receiving the acceptance letter was exciting, although I was also nervous as it had been so long since I’d been in school. I knew this was an important step for my career growth and professional development.

How has the experience in the program been for you?

My experience in the program has been positive and rewarding. It’s been motivating to connect with classmates who are also juggling full-time jobs. The flexibility to work at my own pace has been great, especially when balancing a hectic schedule at times. I encourage anyone serious about advancing their education to take the leap. Don’t wait for the perfect time because life never slows down. I’m so glad I chose not to wait any longer.

What are you hoping to gain from the Enlighten program?

After completing the UVA Enlighten program, I hope to be accepted into the UVA bachelor’s program. I am eager to build on my education and continue to enhance my leadership skills.
