Welcome to the University of Virginia! Whether you're returning to school after some time away or continuing your educational journey, we're excited to have you here. Balancing life, work, and studies as an adult learner can be challenging, but with the right strategies, you can thrive in your online courses. Welcome, Hoos – you've got this! Wahoowa!
Here are ten essential tips to help you make the most of your UVA experience. With these tips in your back pocket, you’ll be well on your way to a successful semester:
1) Set Up a Workspace that Allows for Productivity
Your workspace should be a sanctuary for concentration and productivity. Whether it’s a corner of your living room or a dedicated office, ensure it's free from distractions. Try to separate school time from leisure time by keeping non-school activities out of your workspace.
2) Adopt Time Management Best Practices To Help Balance School, Work, and Family
Juggling school, work, and family can be a daunting task, but it’s doable with proper time management. There are many time management strategies; do a little research and experiment with the method that works for you. Remember to take breaks during your study sessions to avoid burnout. And, don’t be too hard on yourself if everything doesn’t get done perfectly. Your journey as a student is finite, and the sacrifices you make now are leading toward a greater goal.
Accept that some things may have to change temporarily – whether it's ordering takeout more often or letting the house become a little messier – it's all part of the process.
3) Be SMART and Set Goals
Start each semester with clear, achievable goals using the SMART system:
- Specific: Define exactly what you want to achieve.
- Measurable: Determine how you’ll track your progress.
- Attainable: Make sure your goal is realistic.
- Realistic: Ensure the goal fits within your life’s demands.
- Time-Bound: Set a deadline.
Writing down your goals and keeping them visible can help keep you focused and motivated throughout the semester. A fun way to do this is to write them on colorful sticky notes to keep pasted on your computer or textbooks!
4) Tap Into Your Resources
As an online learner, maximizing your resources is key to success. Look for audio versions of textbooks and other study materials that allow you to multitask while driving, exercising, or doing household chores. Audiobooks and podcasts can also be great supplementary tools to reinforce your learning.
Don’t forget to take advantage of your local library – many offer free access to digital resources, eBooks, and even online classes. If you prefer studying with others, explore community study groups or virtual meetups that align with your subjects. By tapping into diverse resources, you can create a well-rounded and flexible approach to your studies.
5) Become a Canvas Pro
Canvas is your online classroom, so becoming familiar with it is essential. Start by downloading the Canvas app to your phone or tablet for easy access to course materials and announcements on the go. If your dashboard feels cluttered, customize it by starring the courses you need most. This way, your essential classes are front and center, and you won’t miss a beat.
Don't forget to enable Canvas notifications to stay informed about important class updates, due dates, and announcements.
6) Connect School and Work
If you're working full-time (or even part-time) while studying, look for ways to connect your work with your school assignments. Are there projects at work that align with your coursework? Or perhaps there is schoolwork that can benefit your professional life? Blurring the lines between the two can make your studies more engaging and practical.
7) Build a Supportive Learning Community (Yes, Even Online!)
Just because you're studying online doesn't mean you're alone. Reach out to friends, family, or classmates who can be your sounding boards for assignments or who can act as proofreaders. Share upcoming deadlines, so they know when you might need their support. You might be surprised at how willing people are to help you succeed.
In your classes, try to form a "UVA family" by connecting with peers. Whether it's through online coffee chats, study groups, or even meeting up in person if possible, having a buddy in your class can make all the difference. And don't forget to get to know your professors (in class and outside of class) – they can be valuable resources for recommendations and advice, both during and after your time at UVA.
8) Embrace Your Authentic Self
As an adult learner, you bring unique life experiences to the classroom. Don’t be afraid to share your journey in discussions, group chats, or assignments. Your perspective can enrich the learning experience for everyone and deepen your own engagement with the material. Be proud of your path and let it shine through in your work.
9) Practice Self-Care
Remember that you are human. It's okay if you can't do it all. Burnout is a real risk, especially when balancing multiple responsibilities. Prioritize self-care in whatever form suits you – whether it's breathwork, meditation, exercise, or hobbies that bring you joy. Make sure to carve out time for yourself this semester.
10) Don’t Be a Stranger
Lastly, though your classes may be online, you’re still very much a UVA student. Plan a visit to Charlottesville if you can – a walking tour of the beautiful UVA campus, designed by Thomas Jefferson, is a must. With your student ID, you can enjoy discounts at local restaurants, stores, and even the bookstore. Treat yourself to some UVA swag like a T-shirt, sweatshirt, or bumper sticker – it's a great way to show your school spirit!
