In its mission to make education more affordable, accessible and achievable, University of Virginia’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies and Center for Public Safety and Justice are pleased to announce the expansion of its bachelor completion program, creating a pathway tailored for public safety professionals.
The inaugural cohort will complete the School’s long-standing Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) degree, an online program developed specifically for working adults. The program’s flexibility means more working professionals have access to a high-quality education that can advance careers, increase opportunities and improve communities. The curriculum and extensive elective opportunities foster both life competencies for public safety professionals and boost workplace proficiencies. Through this program, public safety professionals will build confidence in themselves and their ability to lead others while developing critical skills like communication, collaboration, problem solving and analysis.
“The BIS program introduces you to new people, culture and places. The program will not only broaden your world view; it will prepare you to be more engaged in your own community.”
David Corlett, Senior Director of Undergraduate Degree Programs at UVA’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies
The intent of the public safety cohort is to allow industry professionals to progress through the program together as they foster relationships, share their backgrounds and experiences, and learn from one another. This program builds off the success of a similar program that the School of Continuing and Professional Studies launched in 2023 for the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia.
“Through this specifically tailored cohort, public safety leaders interact with others from across the country and world. The curriculum is designed for those who are working full-time and have significant world experiences they can bring into the classroom. While education itself may not be required to be an exceptional public safety professional, education offers the opportunity to deepen the ability to lead, prepare for future challenges and progress in careers,”
Ben Haiman, Executive Director for UVA’s Center for Public Safety and Justice.
Public safety professionals interested in completing their degree are encouraged to schedule a pre-admission advising appointment with the School’s counselors who can assist in evaluating education opportunities, eligibility, transfer history and more.
To begin classes in fall 2025, applications must be received by May 15, 2025.
